The Balalaika and Domra Association of America (BDAA) presents

the 32nd Annual Convention

July 11-17, 2010
Minneapolis, Minnesota, U.S.A.

Hosted by St. Marys Balalaika Orchestra

“TALL TALE NIGHT”

You may be wondering what this “Tall Tale Night” is all about.  Well, at this convention we decided to take a queue from the Reno convention when they had Cossack Poetry Night.  Well, this time, it is Tall Tale Night.  Participants are encouraged to compose and recite a tall tale of their own.  But there is a hitch.  It must be done Minnesota Style so that is why there have been tidbits of phrases in past newsletters.  You will be provided a full Minnesota Dictionary soon on the website and also in your welcome packet.

Contestants will be judge on costume, use of the Minnesota Dictionary and originality.  You can re-write a story about Paul Bunyan, Fishing (Big around here), camping, and even your first time….  ……….Eating Lutefisk we mean.

Take a story and replace words from the dictionary or make one up from scratch.  Songs are acceptable too.  The sky is the limit.  For costume, we suggest, a plaid, flannel long-sleeved shirt with the sleeves rolled up, with a pair of suspenders, blue jeans rolled up at the bottom with wool socks over them with work boots.  Then the ultimate is the hat.  Can be those rabbit fur hats we use up here in the winter or the basic tuque, (French for knit hat).  Thick Beards are optional.  So, don’t miss this once in a lifetime event on Tuesday night folling the Lipa Slovak dancers. Performance.  Prizes will be for best-dressed, best original story and best use of the dictionary.

Below in the following links, we have provided you with everything you will need to know about:

1)      Lumberjacks (True Description)

2)      The Story Of Paul Bunyan (Actual Tall Tale)

3)      How To Speak Minnesotan (Dictionary)

4)      Minnesota Manners and Etiquette (You will need to know these things)

5)      The Minnesota Ten Commandants (We swear by these)

6)      Technical Terms (For the computer people out there)

7)      The Lumberjack Song (From Monty Python’s Flying Circus)

Just study all information given and create your very own Tall Tale or if you like, take the Story of Paul Bunyan and make it Minnesotan.

This should be fun
